Trump's Tax Plan: A Benefit For All

With President Trump set to announce his tax plan this week, optimism regarding corporate tax cuts have helped increase financial markets to near all-time highs. Trump’s outline has not gone without its fair share of criticism though, citing the reform as an attack on the working class to further fatten the pockets of big business.

Under our current tax system, corporations are taxed thirty five percent, causing large employers to turn to other countries for hiring purposes and decreasing the wages willing to be paid to employees to maintain sufficient profit. Another setback we see with this model, is taxes paid by corporations are largely passed down to investors, consumers, and once again, workers. President Trump hopes to achieve corporate tax reduction down to a flat fifteen percent, offering an incentive for business to increase investments in expansion and innovation, while providing better wages for the American worker and keeping jobs here at home.

In addition to the corporate aspect of Trump’s tax plan, income tax for individual and married tax payers will be simplified from the current seven brackets down to three, while also doubling the standard deduction. These actions will benefit individuals from all class levels while also incentivizing people to rejoin the workforce instead of relying solely on government welfare.

As critics cry out in disdain, virtue signaling their support of the working class while simultaneously swapping favors with the same Wall Street bankers they claim to oppose, we should be willing to look skeptically at the current flawed system and act on making fundamental changes.

Blog Stage 6: Criticism/Commentary

In a blog post titled "Blog 5" for U.S. Government, Betsy Benitez discusses several aspects of Trump’s policies on immigration and border control.

After reading the article, I have noticed statements which upon closer inspection of the facts turn out to be misguided. First off, the article’s claim that Trump desires to rid our country of immigrants is not an accurate representation of his plan. The key word that people most commonly seem to be missing on this issue is “illegal”. President Trump has expressed the need for deportation of “illegal” immigrants and has made clear that those who are here “legally” are safe to stay.

The author also mentions that she believes the scheduled border wall will have insignificant effect on reducing illegal immigration to our country.

According to a recent article for Fox News by Ben Brown titled,“Border Patrol Union President: Illegal Immigration Decline ‘Strictly’ Due to Trump”, illegal border crossing attempts had fallen thirty percent in February. This sharp increase in border security has been accomplished without the proposed thirty-foot wall in place. It would make sense that a more effective barrier than is currently in place on our southern border would only help these numbers.

Emotional Nature of the Left

In this increasingly tense and chaotic political climate we have been witnessing as of recent, it has become clear to me how important emotional neutrality can be. When I hear the cries of injustice from the left or threats of imminent destruction at the hands of terrorists from the right, it can be easy to turn a blind eye to the facts at hand, and give in blindly to the claims of those looking to sway the populace.

A small example of this can be seen in the recent news of President Trump cutting federal funding of the program Meals on Wheels. Democrats looking at any chance to slander Trump for this decision have made me question their credibility in regards to examining the facts of the situation.

This instance was portrayed through mainstream media as if it was the work of the devil himself. Yet taking a closer look at the numbers, it becomes clear that Meals on Wheels only receives three percent of its total budget from the United States government. Democrats recently donated more money towards creating a Bernie Sanders action figure through Kickstarter.
Former President Barrack Obama cut federal funding of this very same program in 2013. Where was the left’s outcry then?

It appears to me that for the Democrats to sustain support for their platform, they will need to work on setting consistent values. Until then I will be fighting for the right.
